What Was the Messaging App on PlayStation Vita?

The PlayStation Vita featured two primary communication tools: the standard Messages app for PSN friends and the unique Near application for location-based social networking. This article clarifies the functions of both platforms, explains their differences, and details the current status of these services following the discontinuation of the Near app.

The Standard Messages Application

For direct communication with friends on the PlayStation Network, the system included a built-in application simply titled “Messages.” This function operated similarly to messaging services on other PlayStation consoles, allowing users to send text-based communications to friends on their friend list. It supported standard PSN connectivity, enabling users to receive notifications when new messages arrived. This app remains the core method for account-related communications on the device, though functionality depends on the current status of PSN services for legacy hardware.

The Near Application

When users ask about the specific messaging app unique to the Vita, they are often referring to “Near.” Stylized as “near” on the home screen, this application was a location-based social networking service. It allowed users to see what games other Vita owners in their vicinity were playing. Beyond discovery, Near facilitated the exchange of virtual gifts and specific game items between users who were physically close to one another. It served as a hybrid between a messaging platform and a social discovery tool, designed to encourage community interaction among handheld gamers.

Service Discontinuation

It is important to note that the Near service was officially discontinued by Sony. The servers supporting the location-based features and gift exchanges were shut down in March 2015. While the application icon may still exist on the system software of some devices, the online functionality required to message strangers or exchange gifts via Near is no longer operational. The standard Messages app for PSN friends continues to function where PSN support for the Vita remains active, but the distinct social features of Near are now a part of the console’s history.
