What Was the Final Official Sinclair QL Software Release

This article examines the software history of the Sinclair QL computer, specifically identifying the last official operating system version issued before support ceased. It details the progression of QDOS ROM updates and distinguishes between manufacturer releases and later third-party enhancements used by the community.

The Sinclair QL, launched in 1984, operated on a proprietary operating system known as QDOS (Quantum Disk Operating System). Upon its initial release, the computer shipped with QDOS version 1.00 stored on ROM chips. Early users quickly discovered various bugs within the system software, ranging from interface issues to data loss vulnerabilities, which necessitated immediate updates from the manufacturer.

Sinclair Research Ltd addressed these critical errors through a series of ROM updates. Version 1.03 was distributed to fix significant stability issues found in the launch software. However, the company faced financial difficulties shortly after the QL’s release, leading to its acquisition by Amstrad in 1986. During this transition period, software support continued briefly under the new ownership.

The final official software release for the Sinclair QL was QDOS version 1.10. This version represented the last update sanctioned and distributed by the corporate entities responsible for the hardware, specifically Sinclair and subsequently Amstrad. While this version resolved many of the lingering bugs from earlier iterations, it did not introduce major new features, as corporate focus had shifted away from the QL platform.

Following the discontinuation of official support, the QL community developed third-party ROM replacements, most notably Minerva and SMS. These unofficial releases offered significant improvements over the official 1.10 version, including better multitasking and hardware compatibility. Despite the popularity of these community-driven projects, QDOS 1.10 remains the definitive final official software release for the Sinclair QL computer.
