Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ Final Production Date and History

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ was a significant iteration of the classic 8-bit home computer, released in 1984 with an improved keyboard over its predecessor. While exact manufacturing logs are not publicly available to pinpoint a specific calendar day, the final production date for the official Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ is widely recognized by historians and collectors as late 1985. This article examines the lifespan of the ZX Spectrum+, the factors leading to its discontinuation, and the transition of the brand to Amstrad in 1986.

Launched in July 1984, the ZX Spectrum+ featured a new injection-moulded keyboard with harder keys, addressing the primary complaint regarding the original rubber-key Spectrum. It retained the same 48KB memory configuration and internal architecture as the previous model but offered a more durable casing and reset button. The machine enjoyed strong sales throughout 1984 and into the following year, solidifying Sinclair’s position in the British home computing market during the mid-80s boom.

Production of the ZX Spectrum+ ceased in late 1985 as Sinclair Research prepared to launch the ZX Spectrum 128. The 128 model offered expanded memory and enhanced sound capabilities, rendering the 48KB Spectrum+ obsolete in the company’s lineup. Although Sinclair continued to sell existing stock into early 1986, manufacturing of the “+” model specifically had concluded before the company’s computer division was sold to Amstrad in April 1986.

Following the acquisition, Amstrad continued to produce Sinclair-branded computers, but the specific ZX Spectrum+ model was not revived. Instead, Amstrad introduced the ZX Spectrum +2, which integrated a cassette deck into the design of the existing 48KB architecture. Consequently, the original Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ remains a distinct product of the 1984 to 1985 era, marking the end of an initial phase in the Spectrum’s long history before the Amstrad takeover changed the production landscape.
