Last First-Party Game Released for Xbox 360

The final first-party game released for the Xbox 360 was ReCore, which launched in September 2016. This title marked the end of an era for Microsoft Studios on the legacy console as the company shifted its full development focus toward the Xbox One platform. While a few third-party titles arrived slightly later, ReCore stands as the last official first-party production designed to run on the hardware.

The Xbox 360 enjoyed a remarkably long lifecycle, spanning over a decade from its 2005 launch to its discontinuation in 2016. By the time ReCore was released, the Xbox One had already been on the market for nearly three years. Microsoft strategically used this period to transition players to the new generation while still supporting the massive installed base of the 360. ReCore was part of a small wave of cross-generation titles intended to bridge the gap between the two systems.

Developed by Armature Studio and Comcept, ReCore is an action-adventure platformer that follows the journey of a human survivor named Joule and her robotic companions. The game was published directly by Microsoft Studios, solidifying its status as a first-party exclusive. Its release coincided with the console’s final phase, serving as a send-off for the hardware that helped define modern online console gaming.

It is important to distinguish between the last first-party game and the absolute last game released for the system. The final game overall for the Xbox 360 was Just Dance 2017, published by Ubisoft in October 2016. However, since Ubisoft is a third-party publisher, ReCore retains the distinction of being the final title funded and published internally by Microsoft for the platform.

The release of ReCore signaled the official conclusion of first-party development for the Xbox 360. Following this launch, Microsoft ceased production of new games for the console to concentrate resources on the Xbox One ecosystem and subsequent projects. This transition closed the chapter on one of the most successful consoles in history, leaving ReCore as the final flagship title in its library.
