How to Update Xbox One Controller Firmware
Keeping your Xbox One controller up to date ensures optimal performance, fixes connectivity bugs, and adds new features. This guide walks you through the simple steps required to update your controller’s firmware using either an Xbox console or a Windows PC. You will learn what equipment is needed, how to navigate the settings menus, and how to troubleshoot common issues if the update fails.
What You Will Need
Before beginning the update process, ensure you have the necessary hardware and software ready. You cannot update the controller firmware wirelessly; a physical connection is required.
- Xbox One Controller: The device you intend to update.
- USB Cable: A micro-USB or USB-C cable compatible with your controller model.
- Device: An Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S console, or a Windows 10/11 PC.
- Internet Connection: Required to download the update files.
Updating via Xbox Console
Updating through the console is often the most straightforward method if you are already gaming on your Xbox.
- Turn on your Xbox console and sign in to your profile.
- Connect your controller to the console using the USB cable.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Navigate to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller you wish to update from the list.
- If an update is available, you will see an ellipsis (…) menu on the controller image. Select it.
- Choose Firmware version and then select Update now.
- Do not disconnect the controller until the process is complete.
Updating via Windows PC
If you do not have access to an Xbox console, you can update the firmware using the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows computer.
- Connect your controller to your PC using the USB cable.
- Open the Microsoft Store and download the Xbox Accessories app if it is not already installed.
- Launch the Xbox Accessories app.
- If an update is required, a prompt will appear automatically upon launching the app.
- Click Update now to begin the installation.
- Wait for the progress bar to finish and do not unplug the controller during this time.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Sometimes the update process may encounter errors. If you cannot update your controller, try the following steps.
- Check the Cable: Ensure you are using a data-transfer USB cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Restart the Device: Power cycle your Xbox console or restart your PC and try again.
- Change USB Ports: Plug the cable into a different USB port on your console or computer.
- Battery Level: Ensure the controller has sufficient battery power or keep it plugged in via USB during the update.
- Reconnect: Disconnect the controller, wait ten seconds, and reconnect it firmly.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the controller or the USB port.
