How to Set Up Parental Controls on Xbox One

Managing what your children play and see on their console is essential for digital safety. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of configuring parental controls on your Xbox One, covering account creation, screen time limits, and content restrictions to ensure a safe gaming environment for your family.

Create a Child Account

To begin, you need a specific account for your child. Navigate to the Sign-in & security settings on your console and select Add new. Choose Create a new one and enter the required information. When prompted, specify that this is a child account. This links the new profile to your adult Microsoft account, granting you oversight capabilities.

Use the Xbox Family Settings App

While you can adjust settings directly on the console, the Xbox Family Settings app available on iOS and Android offers greater convenience. Download the app and sign in with your adult Microsoft account. You will see your child’s profile listed there. This app allows you to manage settings remotely without needing to access the console directly.

Set Screen Time Limits

Within the app or console settings, locate the Screen time section. Here you can schedule when your child is allowed to play. You can set specific hours for weekdays and weekends, as well as establish a daily time limit. Once the limit is reached, the console will notify the user and restrict access until the next scheduled period.

Manage Content Restrictions

To control what games and apps are accessible, go to Content restrictions. You can filter games based on age ratings, such as ESRB or PEGI scores. Additionally, you can block inappropriate websites on the Edge browser and prevent your child from making purchases without your explicit permission by requiring a passkey for buying content.

Privacy and Online Safety

Finally, review the Privacy & online safety settings. You can control who your child can communicate with, whether they can join multiplayer games, and if their activity history is visible to others. Adjust these settings to match your comfort level regarding online interactions and data sharing.
