How to Screenshot Gameplay on Nintendo Switch

Capturing memorable moments during your gaming sessions on the Nintendo Switch is a simple process that requires just a button press. This guide explains the exact controls needed to take screenshots, how to access your capture album, and the specific requirements for recording video clips on compatible models. Whether you are using the original console, the OLED model, or the Switch Lite, you will learn how to save and share your gameplay highlights effortlessly.

Using the Capture Button

To take a screenshot while playing a game, locate the Capture Button on your Joy-Con or Pro Controller. On the left Joy-Con, this is a square button situated below the directional arrows. If you are using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, the Capture Button is found on the top left face of the controller, near the USB-C port. Pressing this button once will instantly capture the current screen display. You will see a flash and hear a shutter sound, confirming that the image has been saved to your console’s internal memory.

Viewing and Managing Your Captures

After taking a screenshot, you can view it immediately by holding down the Capture Button for about a second, which opens the latest image directly. To browse all your saved media, select the Album icon on the Home Menu. Inside the Album, you can organize screenshots by game or date. From here, you have the option to edit images by adding icons or text before sharing them. While direct social media posting options have changed over time, you can still transfer images to a computer or smartphone for sharing via a USB cable or by inserting a microSD card.

Recording Video Clips

Certain supported games allow you to record the last 30 seconds of gameplay. To use this feature, press and hold the Capture Button instead of tapping it. This function is available on all Nintendo Switch models following system updates, but it depends on whether the specific software developer has enabled video capture for that title. If the feature is unavailable for the game you are playing, holding the button will simply take a standard screenshot. Recorded videos are stored in the same Album as your static images and can be managed similarly.

Saving Screenshots to a MicroSD Card

If you plan to take many screenshots or record multiple video clips, your internal storage may fill up quickly. To manage this, insert a compatible microSD card into the slot under the kickstand on the back of the console. Once inserted, go to System Settings in the Home Menu, then select Data Management. Here, you can change the default save location for screenshots and videos from System Memory to SD Card. This ensures your captures are stored externally, making it easier to remove the card and transfer files to a PC for editing or backup without needing a cable connection.
