How to Pair a New Controller to PS4

Connecting a new gamepad to your console is essential for multiplayer gaming or replacing a broken device. This guide explains the simple steps to pair a new controller to the PS4 using both USB cable and Bluetooth methods, ensuring you can get back to gaming quickly without technical hassle.

Connecting via USB Cable

The easiest and most reliable method to sync a new DualShock 4 controller is by using a micro-USB cable. Start by turning on your PS4 console using an already paired controller or the power button on the system itself. Once the dashboard is visible, plug the small end of the USB cable into the top of the new controller and the standard USB end into one of the front ports on the console.

Press the PS button in the center of the new controller. The light bar on the back of the gamepad should glow blue, indicating that it is syncing. Once the light turns a solid color assigned to your user profile, the controller is paired. You can now unplug the cable and use the controller wirelessly.

Pairing Wirelessly Without a Cable

If you do not have a USB cable available or need to pair a second controller without plugging it in, you can use the Bluetooth settings menu. Navigate to the Settings menu on your PS4 home screen using an existing controller. Select Devices and then choose Bluetooth Devices.

On the new controller you wish to pair, press and hold the Share button and the PS button simultaneously for about five seconds. The light bar on the controller will begin to flash rapidly, indicating it is in pairing mode. On your TV screen, the controller should appear as “Wireless Controller” in the list of available devices. Select it with your existing controller to complete the pairing process.

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

Sometimes a new controller may fail to pair due to previous connections or low battery. If the controller does not respond, try using a different micro-USB cable, as some cables are designed for charging only and do not transfer data. Ensure the controller has sufficient charge before attempting to sync.

If issues persist, you can reset the controller manually. Locate the small reset hole on the back of the gamepad near the L2 button. Use a paperclip or pin to press the button inside the hole for five seconds. After resetting, connect the controller to the PS4 via USB again and press the PS button to re-establish the connection.
