How to Expand Storage on Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch comes with limited internal memory, which can fill up quickly as you download more games and updates. This guide explains how to expand your console’s storage capacity using a compatible microSD card. You will learn about the types of cards supported, how to choose the right size, and the simple steps to install and manage your new storage space effectively.
Understanding Internal Storage Limitations
The standard Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED model come with 32GB of internal storage, while the Switch Lite also features 32GB. However, a portion of this space is reserved for the system software, leaving users with significantly less usable space out of the box. Physical game cartridges do not install the full game to the system, but digital downloads, updates, DLC, and screenshots can consume available memory rapidly. Once the internal storage is full, you cannot download new content without deleting existing data or adding external storage.
Choosing the Right microSD Card
To expand your storage, you need a microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card. The Nintendo Switch supports cards up to 2TB, though cards currently available on the market typically max out at 1TB. For optimal performance, look for a card that supports UHS-I (Ultra High Speed Phase I). While UHS-II cards are backward compatible, the Switch cannot utilize the faster speeds, so a standard UHS-I card is more cost-effective. Reputable brands like SanDisk, Samsung, and Lexar are recommended to ensure data integrity and read/write speeds that minimize load times.
Installation Steps
Before inserting the card, you must power off the Nintendo Switch completely. Do not just put it to sleep; hold the power button and select Power Options > Turn Off. For the standard Switch and OLED model, kickstand on the back of the console to reveal the microSD card slot. For the Switch Lite, the slot is located under the built-in kickstand on the back. Gently insert the microSD card with the label facing away from the console until it clicks into place. Once secured, power the console back on. The system will automatically detect the new storage and may prompt you to restart.
Managing Your Data
After installation, most new downloadable software, updates, and DLC will automatically save to the microSD card. You can manage this in System Settings under Data Management. It is important to note that save data is always stored on the internal memory and cannot be moved to the microSD card. However, you can move existing downloadable software between the internal memory and the microSD card via the Data Management menu. If you insert a microSD card that has been used in another device, the Switch will likely require you to format it, which will erase all existing data on the card, so back up any important files beforehand.
