How to Configure Fast-Forward Ratio in RetroArch

This guide provides a step-by-step overview of adjusting the fast-forward ratio in RetroArch to accelerate gameplay speed. You will learn how to navigate the settings menu to modify the fastforward rate, configure hotkeys for temporary speed boosts, and ensure your changes are saved correctly for future sessions.

Accessing the Framerate Settings

To begin configuring the speed settings, launch RetroArch and load the main menu. Navigate to the Settings option from the horizontal menu bar. Once inside the Settings menu, scroll down until you locate the Framerate section. This area contains all the options related to timing, vsync, and speed modification.

Adjusting the Fastforward Ratio

Within the Framerate menu, find the setting labeled Fastforward Ratio. The default value is typically set to 3.00x, meaning gameplay will run three times faster than normal when activated. You can increase this value to speed up grinding in RPGs or decrease it for a more moderate acceleration. Select the option and use the left and right keys on your keyboard or controller to adjust the number to your preference.

Setting Up Hotkeys

Changing the ratio alone does not activate the feature; you must assign a hotkey to trigger it. Go back to the main Settings menu and select Input. Look for the Hotkey section where you can bind specific actions. Find the Fast Forward option and assign a button on your controller or a key on your keyboard. You can also configure whether holding the button activates the speed or if a single press toggles it on and off by adjusting the Fast Forward Mode setting.

Saving Your Configuration

After adjusting the ratio and binding your keys, it is essential to save the configuration file. Return to the main menu and select Configuration File. Choose Save Current Configuration to ensure these settings persist the next time you launch RetroArch. If you want these settings to apply only to a specific core or game, you can save a core override or content directory override instead of the global configuration.
