How to Change RetroArch Theme on macOS

Customizing the look of your emulator can significantly enhance your gaming experience. This article provides a straightforward guide for macOS users who want to modify the visual style of their RetroArch interface. You will learn how to access the necessary settings, download required assets, and apply a new theme to personalize your dashboard quickly.

Prepare Your Installation

Before attempting to change the interface, ensure you are running the latest version of RetroArch on your Mac. Older versions may lack certain menu options or compatibility with newer theme assets. Launch the application and wait for the main menu to load completely. If you have not yet updated your core files or assets, it is recommended to do so now to ensure all theme options are available.

Download Theme Assets

Most interface themes require specific asset files to display correctly. Navigate to the Main Menu and select the Online Updater option. From the list of available updates, choose Update Assets. This process will download the latest icons, fonts, and theme backgrounds supported by the software. Wait for the download to complete and return to the Main Menu once the notification confirms the process is finished.

Select Your User Interface Theme

With the assets installed, you can now choose your preferred visual style. Go to Settings and scroll down to the User Interface section. Look for the Menu Theme option within this submenu. Click on it to reveal a list of available themes such as Ozone, XMB, or RGUI. Select the theme you wish to use from the list. The interface may update immediately, or you might need to confirm the selection depending on your current configuration.

Apply and Save Changes

After selecting a new theme, it is crucial to save your configuration to prevent reverting to the default style upon restart. Navigate back to the Main Menu and select Configuration. Choose Save Current Configuration to write the changes to your config file. Finally, restart RetroArch to ensure the new theme loads correctly and all visual elements are rendered properly on your macOS system.
