Configure RetroArch Aspect Ratio for Widescreen Hacks

This guide explains how to properly configure aspect ratio settings when using widescreen hacks in RetroArch. You will learn how to adjust video settings, manage core options, and save overrides to ensure games display correctly without stretching or black bars on modern monitors.

Enable the Widescreen Hack

Before adjusting the aspect ratio, you must activate the widescreen functionality within the specific emulator core you are using. Not all cores support this feature, but many popular ones like PCSX2, Dolphin, and Beetle PSX do. Load the game you wish to play, then open the RetroArch Quick Menu by pressing the designated hotkey combination, usually F1 on PC or Select + X on controllers. Navigate to Options or Core Options and look for a setting labeled “Widescreen Hack,” “Force Widescreen,” or similar. Enable this toggle to enable the modified rendering resolution.

Adjust Video Aspect Ratio Settings

Once the hack is enabled, you need to tell RetroArch how to display the new image dimensions. Return to the Quick Menu and select Video. Locate the Aspect Ratio setting. For most widescreen hacks, setting this to “Core Provided” is the best option, as the core will automatically signal the correct ratio to the frontend. If the image appears stretched or distorted, manually change this setting to “16:9” or “16:10” depending on your monitor and the specific game requirements. Avoid using “Full Screen” or “Stretch” options, as these often distort the geometry of the 3D models rendered by the hack.

Save Content Directory Overrides

To avoid configuring these settings every time you launch a game, you should save them as an override. While still in the Quick Menu with the game running and the settings configured, navigate to Overrides. Select “Save Content Directory Overrides.” This ensures that any game launched from the same folder will automatically apply the widescreen hack and the correct aspect ratio settings. If you need these settings for only one specific game, choose “Save Game Overrides” instead.

Troubleshooting Display Issues

If you encounter black bars on the sides or top of the screen, check your global Video settings under the main RetroArch Settings menu. Ensure that “Crop Overscan” is disabled, as widescreen hacks often utilize the full frame buffer. Additionally, verify that your monitor is set to its native resolution in your operating system settings. Some cores may require a restart to apply widescreen changes fully, so close the content and reload it if the aspect ratio does not update immediately after saving.
