Commodore VIC-20 Memory Upgrade Cartridge Slot Location

This guide identifies the specific port used for memory expansions on the Commodore VIC-20 home computer. It provides a clear description of the physical hardware location and explains how users can install RAM cartridges to increase the system capabilities beyond the standard configuration.

The Commodore VIC-20 utilizes a single cartridge port situated on the right side of the computer casing. This expansion slot is the designated location for inserting memory upgrade cartridges, such as the 16KB or 32KB RAM expansions released during the system’s lifecycle. When users need to run software that requires more than the base 5KB of RAM, they must plug the compatible memory cartridge directly into this edge connector. The port connects to the expansion area of the processor’s memory map, allowing the additional chips on the cartridge to be addressed by the CPU. To install an upgrade, the computer must be turned off before inserting the cartridge into the right-side slot to ensure safe connection. Once powered on, the VIC-20 detects the added memory, enabling larger BASIC programs and more advanced games to function correctly.
