The CPU was explicitly interrupted by the DMA request logic, and the refresh cycles were not always as tightly synchronized with other system activities like video rendering. Later x86 chipsets eventually integrated this logic into the northbridge, but during the Amiga 1200’s prime, the discrete timer and DMA method was prevalent.
