Can the PS3 Play SACD Discs?

The ability of the PlayStation 3 to play Super Audio CD (SACD) discs is a common question among audiophiles and console collectors. While the answer is technically yes, it is heavily dependent on the specific hardware model you own. Early launch versions of the console included the necessary decoding hardware, but Sony removed this feature in subsequent revisions. This article details which PS3 models support SACD playback, explains the limitations regarding region locking, and offers alternatives for users with newer hardware.

Compatible PS3 Models

Only the original launch models of the PlayStation 3 are capable of playing SACD discs. Specifically, the 60GB model (CECHA01) and the 20GB model (CECHB01) released in North America in 2006 include the Emotion Engine chip and the necessary audio decoding hardware. Certain early models released in Japan also support the format. These consoles were marketed as comprehensive entertainment hubs capable of playing backward-compatible PlayStation 2 games and high-fidelity audio discs.

Removal of SACD Support

Sony discontinued SACD support starting with the 80GB backward-compatible model (CECHC01) and all subsequent versions, including the PS3 Slim and PS3 Super Slim. The removal was part of a cost-reduction strategy to lower the manufacturing price of the console. Even if a user installs older firmware on a later model, the physical hardware required to decode the DSD audio stream found on SACD discs is absent, making playback impossible on these units.

Region Locking Limitations

Even if you possess a compatible launch model, region locking presents a significant hurdle. SACD discs often carry region codes similar to DVDs and Blu-rays. A North American PS3 will generally only play SACD discs coded for Region A or all regions. Importing discs from Europe or Japan may result in the console refusing to play the audio content, despite having the technical capability to read the disc format.

Alternatives for Audio Playback

For owners of PS3 Slim or Super Slim consoles, or those facing region lock issues, alternative solutions exist for high-resolution audio. Dedicated universal Blu-ray players often support SACD playback at various price points. Additionally, users can rip their SACD collection to high-resolution digital files such as FLAC or DSD on a computer, provided they have the appropriate optical drive and software, allowing them to stream the audio to their PS3 via media server applications or play it on other modern devices.
